There is something very funny about being told that we do not really own our games anymore, then seeing the same company launch a LEGO version of its console.

Ownership is complicated when it involves a game you paid for, but very important when it comes to 1,200 tiny plastic pieces you can lose under the couch

In less than a month, they managed to launch two consoles with no games. One is a digital box that can revoke your access to something you bought because a licensing deal expired somewhere in a boardroom. The other is a little brick console that cannot play anything because it is made of LEGO, which is at least honest about what it is doing.

And listen, I get it. Companies like money. I, too, enjoy money. The issue is that they clearly understand the appeal of having a physical thing. You can hold it, display it, trade it, lend it to a friend, and find it years later in a closet while wondering why you ever thought frosted tips were a reasonable decision.

That was basically our whole childhood. We collected stuff with the focus of medieval monks preserving sacred texts. Cards, CDs, games, toys, weird little plastic figures that came with snacks. You could tell a lot about a person by the pile of objects in their room. Now the pile is mostly charging cables that belong to devices we cannot identify.

Sure, there are still trends where everyone needs to own the same tiny collectible creature for six weeks. But that feels less like collecting and more like being drafted into a very cute and slightly evil economic crisis.

Maybe that is why physical media still matters. It is not just about having stuff. It is about knowing that the stuff is actually yours. Nobody can update a cartridge out of existence. Nobody can remove your old CD from the shelf. You can hold it, keep it and, if necessary, lend it to your friend who definitely promises to give it back.
